February 2022

Not sure about you, but my family seems to be spending a great deal of time on the mower! Remember two years ago?  Our mower was covered in dust and a family of spiders living on it.  The rain brings lush fast-growing lawns and quite a few varieties of pest and diseases to deal with. I try to be as environmentally conscious as possible and use eco-neem.

Try and be vigilant, with an early morning or evening walk through your patch to tidy away the decaying or dying leaves which helps prevent unwanted critters living on your plants. Though, I am inclined to share produce with critters as well as friends and family.

February can be a brutal time to grow all but the toughest herbs. I like to have some “under the patio” potted herbs at this time of the year. There is also a scene of satisfaction having potted on or potting up some herbs to use in the kitchen. French tarragon, parsley, basil, chilli, mint and chives are some of my favourites.

Seeds and seedlings to plant now:

Amaranth, beans (dwarf), beetroot, broccoli, brussels sprouts, burdock, carrot, cauliflower, chives, collards, cucumber, endive, fennel, kohlrabi, leek, lettuce, mustard greens, onion, radish, rosella, salsify, silverbeet, swede, turnip.
