July 2022

The winter solstice has been and gone. Days will be getting longer, but there is still cold weather to come.

While everything is in a deciduous state it is a good time to get a few jobs done. By the time spring is well and truly here, everything will be blooming!

  • It’s time to reduce last seasons wisteria shoots by cutting back to two or three buds.

  • Prune back hydrangeas just above their plumb buds along the stems, reducing some of the older branches will increase generation of new branches low down on the bush.

  • Continue to plant and transplant deciduous trees, shrubs and vines.

  • Dead head camellias and azaleas to enhance the flowering display.

  • Spike compacted lawns with a garden fork to improve drainage and air and water penetration.

  • With many flowering plants have gone to sleep enjoy the in season flowering daphne, camellia, azalea and wattle.

  • With so many veggies and fruit in demand it might be time to get a head start on your spring produce!

  • Plant Spring Vegetables:

Artichoke (globe), Asparagus crowns, Broad Bean, Broccoli, Cabbage,  Celery, Chives, Coriander, Endive, English Spinach, Kale, Kohlrabi, Lettuce, Mint, Onion, Pea, Potato, Radish, Snow Pea, Spring Onion, Strawberry, Turnip.

Plant flowering seedlings:

Calendula, Dianthus, English Daisy, Honesty, Marigold, Polyanthus, Primula, Snapdragon, Statice, Sweet William, Verbena.
