May 2021

May speeds by, in the Upper Hunter, at a very fast rate. No sooner are children back at school after the Easter break and Anzac Day and life gets busier preparing for the many events during the Scone Horse Festival.

I have in years past, noticed the Upper Hunter weather temperatures plummet in May. Although with the rain falling in the past few days we have had what my dear old aunt would say is “Soft Weather Days.” This is when the bug population seem to explode. So, take some time out to check out the plants in your patch and the number of bugs!

The second Sunday in May is of course Mother’s Day! I love to take some time to think about all the positive moments the many mothers I know bring to my life.

Time to grow artichoke, asian greens, asparagus, broad beans, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, chives, coriander, corn salad, daikon, dill, endive, eschalot, fennel, garlic, Jerusalem, artichoke, kale, kohirabi, leek, lettuce, mint, mizuna, mustard greens, onion, peas, radish, rocket, silver beet, snow peas, spring onion, sugar snap peas, spinach and turnip.

Alyssum, aquilegia, candytuft, calendula, forget-Me-Not, foxglove, heartsease, hollyhock, lavender, larkspur, linaria, lobelia, nemesia, pansy, poppy, stock, sweet pea and viola.

Jobs to Do

Raking up fallen leaves for leaf mould is a great garden booster! Keeping on top of weeds after rain, to add to compost. Turning compost now!

Enjoy the Month of May! Don’t let time speed by too quickly without celebrating your special moments in time!
