September 2021
What glorious weather. Cool nights and warm days, I often wonder why we can’t have this weather all year round?
I love each and every day at present there is always some-thing to look forward to unfurling in the plant world! How magnificent have the Magnolias been?
There are so many varieties to choose from, it’s very hard to stop at one specific species.
The Lavender varieties grow each year and have been truly spectacular in the last few weeks. The Osteospernums are also numerous, tough, heat and cold tolerant with low water needs and put on a long and spectacular show. Geraniums, Verbenas, Ranunculus and Primulas are also looking wonderful.
I have to say I enjoy the lushness of the new growth of shrubs and trees. There are so many shades of green leaves not to mention reds and purples.
What I especially love is the interaction with my customers at this time of the year. Sharing their joy and optimism of gardening. Whether it be the race to grow spring/summer vegetables or the hope of NO more frosts to ensure an early flowering patch of petunias.
Will the Quirindi sunflower spectacular fever spread to the Upper Hunter?
It is still very cool in my patch. Most mornings there is a frost. My garden is slow to wake up. Even though much of our garden died during the prolonged drought, I’m excited to report there are plants to replant.
We have begun with some mature trees near the entrance and some shade trees in laneways.
I have a project in the making that I can barely contain my excitement, I’m so delighted!
I’m beginning a permaculture patch of mostly flowers, shrubs and some vegetables. There is a slope and some shade involved, not to mention very open to the breeze! I’ll keep you posted on how I go…
There are many jobs to tackle at present. Quite a few healthy, large snakes have been sighted recently with the warm weather events.
Time to tidy up any bits of timber, leaves or debris around buildings and green houses. Sweep out sheds to see if you can notice any evidence of rodents.
Dig up, aerate and add organic matter to any parts of the garden that you wish to plant out in the near future.
Mulch, mulch mulch. Check for pests and disease. Enjoy every moment of Spring!
