October 2021
Isn’t this absolutely the best time of the year to be in the garden?
Floral scents are everywhere with birds chortling enthusiasticly. October is the perfect time to wander around the garden with an early morning cup of tea and see what is happening in your patch. New growth, wind burn, perhaps lack of water, perhaps too much water! Check for critter’s. Mostly, enjoy the moment!
October is a great time to take begonia or African violet leaf cuttings. Train new climbing plants, such as clematis and wistheria, onto supports and don’t be afraid to snip over enthusiastic new growth to keep the plant growing where you would like it to grow.
Now is a great time to pot up Christmas cheer. Time to think about dividing ferns to give away a few of the extra pots for presents. Keep them in a protected spot out of the direct sun and by Christmas they will be looking fabulous.
Spray an insecticidal solution onto plants that are being attacked by sap sucking insects. Repot potted plants with some good quality potting mix and some soil wetting agent to ensure they are ready to cope with the looming heat of summer.
Feed Gardenias now to ensure they look their best prior to flowering. Feed hydrangeas every two weeks to encourage bountiful blooms.
Don’t forget to enjoy every moment in your patch!
